Kramnik vs. Deep Fritz at Match Midpoint

Friday December 1, 2006

At midpoint in the six game man - machine match between World Champion Vladimir Kramnik and strong chess playing computer Deep Fritz, the computer leads 2-1. Kramnik drew games one and three with the White pieces, but lost the second game when he overlooked a mate in one move in a drawn position. Chess fans everywhere are scratching their heads, wondering how this could happen to one of the world's strongest players.

That blunder, the worst that a chess player of any level can make, may have cost Kramnik 500.000 US$. As the match terms specify, 'If he is victorious, Kramnik will win one million US dollars. Otherwise, the World Champion will walk away with only half that amount.' With only three games remaining, Kramnik needs to score 2.5 points to win the match. That's a tall order against a formidable opponent who will have the White pieces in two of the games.
