The opening ceremony for the long awaited World Championship Unification Match between GM Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and GM Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria takes place 21 September at Elista, Kalmykia. Topalov is ranked at world no.1 and Kramnik at no.4.

Full match regulations including a detailed schedule are available from the FIDE site. There is no official site announced for the match, but the world federation has a match page with links to all relevant information.

The Players : Both players are 31 years old, an age often considered to be in the range of a chess player's peak performing years. For each player we give the FIDE rating as of July 2006 and birthday; plus links to the FIDE card at FIDE.com, collected games at ChessGames.com, profile at Wikipedia.com, and a selection of puzzles from the player's games at WTHarvey.com. The overall record between the two players is also available at ChessGames.com.

The Schedule : The first game of the 12-game match starts 23 September. Games 1-10 are to be played at a rate of one game a day for two consecutive days, followed by a rest day. Game 11, game 12, and tiebreaks (if required) will be played at a rate of one game a day followed by a rest day. The match could easily go the distance and into tiebreak.
