Elsewhere on the Web : Kramnik Retains His Title

Saturday October 23, 2004

Kramnik and Hans Leusen (Dannemann) Congratulations to Vladimir Kramnik of Russia! A point behind in his match against Peter Leko of Hungary, Kramnik fought tooth and nail in the final two games of the Dannemann World Chess Championship to retain his title of World Champion.

Kramnik pressed hard with the Black pieces in game 13 and had Leko on the ropes, but Leko's great defensive skill saved the draw. Needing a win in the final game, Kramnik played the aggressive 3.e5 against Leko's Caro-Kann, kept an advantage throughout the game, and caught Leko's King in a mating attack.

Both players won one game each with the White pieces and one game with the Black pieces. The other ten games were drawn. Since Kramnik had the advantage of a drawn match, he kept his title.
