After three rounds, eight players remain in contention for the 2004 Women's World Championship. Two, including former World Champion Maia Chiburdanidze, are from Georgia, the traditional powerhouse of women's chess. Two more participants, Xu Yuhua and Koneru Humpy, are from emerging chess powers China and India, and will meet in the quarterfinal round.
