Reti System

1.Nf3

One of the most flexible opening moves, the Reti can transpose into many other closed lines. See the English Opening for related variations. The following example lines show some of the many possible ideas.

Example line 1

1.Nf3 Nf6 2.g3 g6 3.Bg2 Bg7 4.O-O O-O 5.d3 d6

Here Black follows symmetrically.

Example line 2

1.Nf3 d5 2.g3 c5 3.Bg2 Nc6 4.O-O e6 5.d3 Nf6

Here White avoids c4 and Black builds a center.

Example line 3

1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 d4 3.g3 c5 4.Bg2 Nc6 5.d3 e5

Here White plays c4 and Black captures space, opening the diagonal for the Bg2.

For more about these variations, see Opening Tutorial : Reti Opening (offsite).
