White renounces Pawn action in the center by preparing to fianchetto the Queen's Bishop. The other Bishop may also be finachettoed.

Example line 1

1.b3 Nf6 2.Bb2 g6 3.e4 d6 4.g3 Bg7 5.Bg2 O-O

Black counters by also holding back in the center, instead building a position similar to the King's Indian Defense.

Example line 2

1.b3 e5 2.Bb2 Nc6 3.e3 d5 4.Bb5 Bd6

Black counters by building a Pawn center. White will attempt to undermine it; Black will attempt to maintain it.
